Onda Cero – ‘Guitar Legends Hall’, a pioneering museum in Europe that explains the history of the electric guitar 01/07/2024

In the ‘Museums of Barcelona’ section, we discover museums that, whether due to their uniqueness, their antiquity or the opposite, because they have just opened their doors, are worth getting to know. Today we have opened the doors of the ‘Guitar Legends Hall’, a museum in the center of the city that has only been open for a few days and is already making a strong impression. And it’s no wonder, as it is a museum dedicated to the electric guitar and the musicians who have become legends playing the strings of this instrument, especially characteristic of rock. Barcelona already has a new museum. On June 8, the ‘Guitar Legends Hall’ opened its doors, a museum dedicated to the electric guitar founded by a Catalan, Juan José Castellano. Castellano has been collecting guitars, both originals and replicas, of the great rock legends for many years, one of the most followed musical genres worldwide. As Castellano recalls, ‘one day, returning from a trip to Zaragoza with my son, we were talking about where we could put all those guitars I had in the collection, since they no longer fit at home and I had to be able to store them somewhere. Then the idea of making a small exhibition in a 300-square-meter room occurred to us, but in the end we ended up renting this 1,300-square-meter space on Calle Portaferrissa that has allowed us to set up the museum.’ Throughout these 1,300 square meters of the museum, we can enjoy many guitars ‘that explain the history of rock and blues, from the 1950s to the present day. We do it in a chronological way with themed spaces in each era or concept, such as television, music videos or festivals,’ Castellano explains. And so, in the many rooms that make up this museum, musical eras with the guitar as the epicenter are represented, such as the Blues room, with which we begin the tour. There are also represented the most representative eras, such as when music began to be broadcast on television or when the music video burst in. Immersive rooms that tell you what a festival was like or the one that introduces you to a concert by eight of the great rock legends, well-differentiated rooms representing each era, each style or each concept… all of it explained through original guitars or exact replicas of many of the great guitars that have shaped the history of music. Undoubtedly a museum that you cannot miss, especially if you are a music lover. And if you are a fan of the guitar, especially the electric one, it is an absolute must.
